The scary truth is that this happens more than we think. According to U.S. Department of Justice, in 2012, there were 346,830 reported rapes or sexual assaults of persons 12 years or older. This number doesn't tell us the whole picture though. The same source also estimates that "Approximately 30% of sexual assault cases are reported to authorities."
Put just these two data points together and we see a serious issue form. There were likely more than 1.15 MILLION Sexual Assaults in the U.S. in 2012! Break that very large number down to what was probably occuring every minute in 2012 and you get 2 women, or girls, being sexually assaulted or raped every minute!
We have all seen the stories, those few and very important moments when the intended victim was able to fight back and stop the attack. We need to do everything in our power to make those stories more common and help cut the number of times these crimes are successfully committed.
